ABSTRACT
Objective: While performing professional responsibilities in the nursing profession, stressful situations may be encountered. The positive development of professional perception and thought will also affect the way nurses and nursing students handle and cope with problems. In this study, it was aimed to examine the cognitive control and flexibility states in stressful situations and nurses' self concept of nurses and nursing students. Material and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The research was conducted with nurses working in public hospitals in a province and three districts in the north of Türkiye and nursing students continuing their education at a state university. 251 nurses and 301 nursing students participated in the research. ''Introductory Information Form'', ''Cognitive Control and Flexibility Scale in Stressful Situations'' and ''Nurse Self-Concept Scale'' were used to collect data. t-test, analysis of variance test and Pearson correlation analysis were used in data analysis. Results: It was determined that the nurses' cognitive control and flexibility total mean scores (90.75±16.20) were higher than the nursing students' mean scores (84.18±14.11). In terms of self-concept, it was determined that the average scores of nurses in care, communication, relations between employees and knowledge were higher than nursing students. It was determined that as the participants' cognitive control and flexibility scores increased, their nurse self-concept scores also increased (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of the research, it was determined that nursing students' flexibility and control over their stress should be increased, and their professionalism and coping skills should be developed and supported.
