ABSTRACT
Objective: The study was conducted to determine the relationship between nurses' attitudes towards medical error and their fatigue levels. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in a university hospital in Anatolia between December 15, 2023-January 15, 2024 in internal and surgical wards. The study included 271 actively working nurses who agreed to participate in the study. The study was descriptive and correlational. Data were collected using the ''Personal Information Form, Attitudes Toward Medical Errors Scale and Chalder Fatigue Scale''. Results: Of the nurses who participated in the study, 73.1% were female, 60.1% were married, 81.9% were undergraduate graduates, 50.6% worked in internal units, 86.7% worked in shifts and 40 hours or more, 43.9% had 11-19 years of working experience, 73.4% reported moderate fatigue, 11.4% had made a medical error and 30.3% had witnessed a medical error of a friend. It was determined that the nurses had a positive attitude with a score of 4.12±0.44 on the Attitude Toward Medical Error Scale and felt tired with a score of 19.57±5.69 on the Chalder Fatigue Scale. There was a statistically significant relationship between nurses' attitudes towards medical error and their fatigue levels (r=0.4; p=0.001). This situation is interpreted as that as the fatigue levels of the nurses increased, their attitudes towards medical error improved positively. Conclusion: The fact that the nurses who participated in our study had high attitudes towards medical error despite feeling fatigue may be based on their intrinsic motivation, having an emotional and ethical responsibility to meet the needs of patients, and the importance they attach to professional values. In this direction, regulating the working hours and conditions of nurses will be effective in reducing fatigue levels.
