ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to investigation the hand strength, sleep quality and depression of individuals with fibromyalgia depending on age and to compare them with healthy individuals. Material and Methods: The study included 81 women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) with an average age of 50.02 ± 8.09 years and 81 healthy women with an average age of 48.91±10.36 years. Women were divided into 3 according to age group. The 26-45 age group was considered as Group 1, the 46-55 age group as Group 2, and the 56-65 age group as Group 3, and the groups were compared with each other. Hand dynamometer was used to evaluate hand strength, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index to evaluate sleep quality, and Beck Depression Scale to evaluate depression. Results: When women with FMS were compared with healthy women, a significant difference was found in favor of healthy women in both right and left hand strength for all age groups in terms of hand strength (p=0.00). When women were compared in terms of depression and sleep quality, a significant difference was found in favor of healthy women in all parameters (p=0.00- 0.02) except the depression parameter (p=0.22) in Group 2. Conclusion: According to the results of our study, it was observed that the hand strength decreased with age oin women with FMS. It was also found that depression and sleep quality did not change in women with FMS acoording to age, but had more depression and impaired sleep quality than healthy women. Due to the decrease in hand strength in these individuals, we recommend that the hand strength should be among the routine evaluation methods.
