ABSTRACT
Objective: This research was conducted to develop a knowledge test specific to the Turkish culture to assess fathers' knowledge about breastfeeding. Material and Methods: A total of 38 items were identified for inclusion in the trial version of the knowledge test. The test was administered between 04 July 2022 and 27 February 2023. In the data collection, 458 fathers whose 0-24-month-old children were still being breastfed were contacted using the descriptive characteristics form and the trial version of the breastfeeding knowledge test father form. In the analysis of the trial version of the knowledge test, the item difficulty index and the item discrimination index were calculated. The minimum, maximum, arithmetic mean, standard deviation and Kuder Richardson-20 (KR-20) reliability coefficient were used to analyse the scores obtained from the test, and frequencies and percentages were used to analyse the descriptive characteristics of the participants. Results: The content validity ratio was calculated as 0,95 when all 34 items predicted to be included in the trial version based on expert opinions were tested. The content validity indices of these 34 items ranged between 0.388 and 1.00. To improve the content validity, the items with content validity indices below 0.80 were rationally arranged in line with the expert opinions and 4 new items were added to the trial version of the test. Thus, it was decided to include 38 items in the final test. Item difficulty indices ranged between 0.29-0.96; item discrimination indices ranged between 0.14-0.88. Items with discrimination indices below 0.30 were rearranged based on expert opinions. The mean test score of the participants was 21.21±6.82, with a minimum score of 1 and a maximum score of 38. The KR-20 reliability coefficient of the test was calculated as 0.85. Conclusion: This test is intended to assist healthcare professionals in assessing fathers' knowledge of breastfeeding and in planning appropriate care, counseling, and training related to breastfeeding.
