Objective: Evaluation of the effects of dacryocystorhinostomy surgery on patients quality of life in patients with dacryocystitis. Material and Methods: The study included 110 patients who underwent lacrimal system surgery. The patients were separated into 3 groups according to the obstruction localisation, as Group I: nasolacrimal canal, Group II: common canaliculus, and Group III: at the punctum level. Following the surgery, each patient group was grouped according to watering complaints as completely recovered, improved, or no change. With lacrimal irrigation examination, the anatomic status of the canal was evaluated as open or closed. The groups were defined as successful or failed according to the watering complaints and lacrimal irrigation examination. The patients were administered the 4-question ocular symptomology scale (OSS) and the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI), which consists of 18 items and has been validated for use. Results: The total GBI and OSS points were +38.89; +44.64, respectively in Group I, +36.41; +48.44 in Group II, and +44.17; +54.84 in Group III (p=0.000; p=0.000). The total GBI and OSS points of the successful and failed groups were +50.69; -14.46, and +61.46,-4.69, respectively in Group I, +47.62; +2.78, and +62.50; +6.50 in Group II, and +40.81;+13.78, and +46.15;+25 in Group III. A strong correlation was determined between total GBI and OSS (r=0.819 p=0.000). Conclusion: GBI scores are an effective tool in the evaluation of quality of life following nasolacrimal surgery. The addition of a questionnaire that evaluates ocular symptoms seems to provide a better evaluation of surgery-related changes.
