Nurses assume duties in different positions within the scope of their job descriptions during their professional practices in the healthcare industry. These different positions include routine clinical nurse, nurse manager and nursing supervisor in the broadest sense. A nursing supervisor is a counterpart in the field of nursing of a person who carries out the duty of superintendence and assuming responsibility in institutions and enterprises providing services in many industries during the continuity of operations. Although having an undergraduate degree is sufficient for becoming a supervisor in nursing, some countries require a postgraduate degree or participation in scheduled certificate programs. This study aims at reviewing the studies in the literature on the working areas, positions, education statuses, authorities, and responsibilities of nursing supervisors and examining in a systematical way whether there is any contribution from Turkey to the data obtained from these studies. The study population was formed by searching indexes in Turkish and English from the databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, and Cochrane between January 2009 and January 2019. The study sample consisted of 34 studies that met the inclusion criteria. It was remarkable that there were no studies from Turkey meeting the inclusion criteria in our study on nursing supervisors and the abundance of international articles as a result of our literature search. New studies need to be conducted in our country on nursing supervisors to fill this deficiency.
