Objective: In view of the negative effects on animal health beyond the cosmetic defect caused by dermatological diseases, it is important to remove the most common finding in dogs with allergic dermatitis. Epidermal pH and degradation of the hydration (removal of the epidermal protective barrier) cause complications in dogs with chronic allergic dermatitis. Patient owners suffer from at least as small dogs as itching and natural appearance of the lesions. From an etiological point of view, itching might be classsified in dermatological, neurological, psychogenic, systemic, mixed or unknown reasons. In this study, the effects of natural peptide lactoferricin on antiparitic purposes and epidermal hydration were investigated. Material and Methods: In our cases, an observational analog scale (ruler) which was adapted for scoring the itch was used. Results and Conclusion: The median (range) values of the pruritus score were determined as 8 (5-10) before treatment and 2 (0-4) after treatment when compared with Callegari Soft Plus corneometer analysis (p<0.001). On the other hand (mean±standard deviation) epidermal pH before and after treatment (4,4±0.4 vs. 5.4±0.2; p<0.001) and hydration values (21.3±11.6 94.0±9.5; Significant statistical differences in p<0.001) can be correlated with the efficacy of lactoferricin. As a result, it can easily be argued that natural peptid analogue lactoferricin can have antipuritic activity in pruritic dogs and can provide repairing and regulating effects on the epidermal hydration and pH (thus providing the functional integrity of the epidermal barrier).
