ABSTRACT
Progresses in science and technology facilitate the management and control of chronic diseases, while enabling individuals to become stronger in disease management. It is important that individuals with diabetes are supported with information technologies to improve and strengthen their self-management. In recent years, diabetes technology improved rapidly, and new technologies were developed. These recently developed technologies have contributed to the effective management of diabetes, improving the quality of life of individuals and reducing physical, psychological and social burdens caused by the disease. Technological advances in diabetes arebased on the development of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII or insulin pump) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems. Diabetes technology includes products such as CGM devices, implantable subcutaneous CGM system, insulin pump, insulin port, hypoglycemia stimulation wristband and nasal glucagon. In addition to these devices, studies are still ongoing on microinvasive patch, hydrogel tattoo, glucose measurement from sweat (glasses and wristband), biosensors measuring glucose from saliva, dental accessories and glucose measurement methods by smart contact lens, which are thought to allow for noninvasive glucose measurement. These technological advancements used in management of diabetes, which involve ongoing studies, aim to increase individuals control over the disease, their quality of life and comfort. It is important for health professionals to have knowledge and insight about technological advancements in fulfilling their training and consultancy roles. In addition, readings on this subject can provide infrastructure for new ideas for solutions, improvements of the features of the technological products used or discovery of different products.
