ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the characteristics of patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and the level of hopelessness experienced by themselves and their relatives. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and their relatives in Elbistan State Hospital and Kahramanmaraş Necip Fazıl City Hospital. The study was carried out between January 2021 and April 2021 with a total of 234 participants, 117 patients and their relatives who agreed to participate in the study without sampling. Introductory information form and semistructured data form about COVID-19 and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used in the research. SPSS 21 package program was used in the evaluation of the data. Percentage, mean, t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Crosstabs and Kruskal-Wallis were used in the evaluation of the data, and the statistical significance value was evaluated at the p<0.05 level. Results: It was determined that 65.0% of the patients participating in the study were over 60 years old, 53.8% were male, 47.0% were secondary school graduates, 70.1% had at least one chronic disease, and 29.9% were obese. It was determined that 32.5% of the patients had no symptoms, 34.2% had mild, 27.4% had moderate, 6.0% had severe (suicidal) hopelessness. The difference between the hopelessness score averages was found to be statistically significant only in the case of income. It was determined that 65.0% of the patients were 60 years or older and most of them complained of pain. Conclusion: It was determined that the individuals participating in the study were mildly hopeless. It was determined that the mean hopelessness score of patients who did not meet their income and expenses and those who were illiterate among patients' relatives were found to be higher. In order to reduce the hopelessness of patients and their relatives, it is recommended to correct incomplete and incorrect information about COVID-19.
