The novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) that emerged in China has spread worldwide and caused many people to become infected or die. Since the spread of this disease is by droplet or face-to-face contact, there is a high risk of transmitting the disease by cross-infection between patients, and dental personnel. Telemedicine applications, which have emerged with the advancement of technology in the last period, provide remote access to many issues such as diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of diseases. Tele-dentistry, on the other hand, is a branch of telemedicine applications, where health information technology and telecommunication systems are used to improve oral-dental health, oral-dental care, consultation, education, and public awareness. The advantages of tele-dentistry are the ability to remotely control and record patient data obtained remotely, be able to contact many people simultaneously, reduce costs in the long-term, and reduce inequalities in health care. However, there are disadvantages such as the inability to perform a physical examination, low quality of information obtained, problems related to data security, some legal problems, costly installation of the systems, and problems in internet access during these remote applications. Since telemedicine is a developing subject in recent years, the data obtained are limited. In this review, the application areas, advantages, disadvantages of tele-dentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic, and suggestions for improving tele-dentistry in this process are presented.
