Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different polishing materials on coffee discoloration of microhybrid and nanohybrid composites. Material and Methods: 80 samples were prepared using microhybrid and nanohybrid resin, and 8 polishing groups were arranged (n=10 for each): Enhance&PoGo, Twist Dia, Soflex Spiral, OptiOne Step, Soflex Disk, Opti Disk, Super Snap and control group. Following polishing procedures, samples were discolored in coffee solution for 72 hours, corresponding to 3 months of coffee consumption. ΔE* for each sample was calculated using spectrophotometer. Perceptibility and acceptability thresholds were considered 3.7 and 5.5, respectively. Two Way Anova and Independent Samples T test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Only the polishing material, was determined effective factor influencing ΔE* (p<0.001). The highest ΔE* was found for Super Snap (3.37±1b), whereas the lowest for Twist Dia (1.54±0.77a). There was no significant difference between nanohybrid and microhybrid composites, regarding color change (p=0.055). According to the overall composite-polishing materials combinations, ΔE* was found significantly low compared to control group (p<0.001), and considered below the perceptibility (<3.7). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, diamond particles embeded, two step, spiral polishing systems, Twist Dia and Soflex Spiral, might be considered as advantageous and effective, compared to other polishing systems, regarding polishing time and composite color change. Further supporting studies should be undergone using different composite materials.
