ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aims to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool in order to determine the discharge education satisfaction of patients discharged from surgical clinics. Material and Methods: The study conducted based on the methodological method. The study, June 15, 2017-October 15, 2017 between having surgery in the surgical ward of Eskişehir Yunus Emre State Hospital in Turkey and discharge training was conducted with 340 patients volunteered to participate in the field work. The data of the study were collected using the 'Patient Socio-Demographic Questionnaire' and 'Discharge Education Satisfaction Scale'. During the development process of the scale, an item pool was created by first reviewing the literature, interviewing patients and surgical nurses representing the sample group. The item pool consisting of 49 items was presented to the opinion of 6 experts. Content validity of the scale was calculated in line with the feedback from experts. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to determine the construct validity of the scale. In order to determine the reliability of the scale, Cronbach α internal consistency coefficient and item total correlation score were calculated. Results: The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of the Discharge Education Satisfaction Scale was found as 0.91. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale showed a 5-factor structure, and the items with a factor load below 0.40 and loaded on more than one factor were removed from the scale and consisted of 21 items. The factor load values of the scale items are above 0.50. Item total item correlation scores range from 0.42 to 0.65. The Cronbach α reliability coefficient of the overall scale was found to be 0.91. Conclusion: It can be said that the Discharge Education Satisfaction Scale, which consists of 21 items in a 5-Likert structure, is a suitable measurement tool in terms of validity and reliability, and that the scale can be used to measure patient satisfaction for discharge education in institutions and organizations that provide health care services.
