Emzirme, çocuğun sağlığını ve hayatta kalmasını sağlamak için en etkili yollardan biridir. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü emzirmenin korunması, yaygınlaştırılması ve desteklenmesi için "Bebek Dostu Hastane" girişimini başlatmış, doğum ve yenidoğan hizmeti veren hastaneler için "Başarılı Emzirme İçin 10 Adım İlkeleri"ni yayımlamıştır. Dünya da ve ülkemizde pek çok hastane Bebek Dostu olmasına karşın, bebeklerin sadece anne sütü alma ve toplam emzirilme süreleri hâlen istendik düzeyde değildir. Bunun en önemli nedenlerinden biri, bebek ve yenidoğana erken dönemde ek gıda verilmeye başlanması ve biberon kullanımıdır. Oysa "Başarılı Emzirme İçin 10 Adım" ilkelerinden 6.sı "Tıbbi bir gereksinme olmadıkça yenidoğana anne sütü dışında herhangi bir yiyecek ya da içecek vermemek", 9.su ise "Anne sütü ile beslenen bebeklere biberon veya yalancı emzik vermemek" gerektiğini belirtmektedir. Bu çalışmada, başarılı emzirme için 10 adım ilkelerinden 6. ve 9.sunun ihlali, nedenleri ve sonuçlarının tartışılmıştır.

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. The World Health Organization has launched the "Baby Friendly Hospital" initiative for the protection, dissemination and support of breastfeeding and, has published the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" (the Ten Steps) for facilities providing maternity and newborn services. Although there are many hospitals Baby Friendly in the world and in our country, the exclusive breastfeeding and total breastfeeding times of babies are not at desired levels. One of the most important reasons for this is the early addition of new food to the newborn and the use of feeding bottles. However, in the 6th step of the principles "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding" are indicate "Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless medically indicated" and in the 9th step "Give no artificial teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infants". In this article, the violation, reasons and results of the 6th and 9th principles of ten-step principles for successful breastfeeding are discussed.
