ABSTRACT
Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the thoughts, attitudes and behaviors of research assistant physicians working in a training and research hospital about Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) applications. Material and Methods: Our cross-sectional study was conducted on 410 research assistants working in İstanbul Medeniyet University Göztepe Education and Research Hospital. Research data was collected by a 13-question questionnaire created by the researchers. The data obtained were analyzed in SPSS 22.0 program. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis were used in data analysis. p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: 8.3% (n=27) of the participants attended the certificate program related to CAM. 51.4% (168) of the physicians stated that more scientific evidence is needed for the therapeutic use of CAM; 33.9% (111) think that CAM is applications that help modern medicine in the treatment of diseases. 46.7% (153) of all physicians stated that they could recommend CAM applications to their patients. 72.5% (111) of the physicians who recommend the use of CAM to their patients question whether they use CAM before giving treatment to their patients. The first three methods heard most are 98.8% (323) acupuncture, 97.2% (318) yoga and 96.3% (315) meditation. The first three methods that they know the most are 82.9% (271) acupuncture, 82.3% (269) meditation and 81.7% (267), respectively. The methods most frequently used by physicians for themselves are 46.5% (152) yoga and meditation, 44% (144) acupuncture and 40.4% (132) music therapy; The most recommended methods for their patients are 52% (170) acupuncture, 50.2% (164) yoga and 49.2% (161) meditation, respectively. Conclusion: According to this study, while the level of knowledge of physicians about methods such as acupuncture, yoga, meditation, leech therapy is high; the level of knowledge on methods such as apitherapy, karyopraxia, therapeutic touch, and shiatsu is low. In addition, it has been observed that the high level of knowledge has an effect on suggesting a method. Attempts to increasethe knowledge of physicians on CAM and the increase of scientific studies on this subject in the future will be beneficial.
