Objective: Aim of this study is to determine the frequency, localization, and diameter of the canalis sinuosus (CS) in the anterior palate region at the alveolar bone level. Additionally, it aims to analyse and compare the findings obtained from orthopantomography (OPG) of CS for which axial, coronal and sagittal cross-sections have been viewed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis has been carried out using CBCT images of 480 (240 male, 240 female) individuals. The anatomical characteristics of the CS were evaluated using multiplanar reformation of CBCT views. Parameters were determined as age, sex, localization of the canal, its relative position to neighbouring teeth and whether it was unilateral or bilateral. The canals with a diameter ≥1 mm in axial images were determined and recorded. Thirty one canalis sinuosus, detected in CBCT, have been examined in OPG images to evaluate the visibility and characteristics of the canal. Results: No significant difference has been found between men and women in terms of prevalence. Mean age was 46.07 (SD 12.52). In total, 31 CS which has an opening into maxillary alveolar bone have been detected in 21 individuals. Mean diameter was found to be 1.37 mm (min 1 mm; max 2 mm) in axial sections. In 26 out of 31 canals no OPG finding relevant with CS is observed, yet in 5 of them, presence of radiolucent canals between radiopaque lines has been detected. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the rate of having the variation of CS which opens to maxillary alveolar bone is found to be only 4.37%. This suggests that not great ratio of the CS poses a risk for complications during alveolar surgery at maxillary anterior region.
