Objective: Mouthrinses are widely used by patients with or without professional recommendations and prolonged use of mouthrinses may cause extrinsic staining of resin restorations. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate different mouthrinses and prolonged exposure on the color stability of Icon resin infiltrant. Material and Methods: Seventy five disk-shaped specimens of Icon 8 mm in diameter and 1 mm in hight were prepared using a customized cylindrical Teflon mould and randomly divided into 5 groups according to the immersion medium: distilled water (control), Listerine Cool Mint, Klorhex, Meridol, and Denta Save. Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer (SpectroShade; Medical High Technologies, Italy) at baseline and at the end of 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. ΔE00 values were calculated and evaluated statistically. Results: At the end of the experiment DentaSave had the highest staining potential, followed by Listerine Cool Mint, Meridol and Klorhex, respectively. All test groups showed discoloration over the clinically acceptable threshold (p<0.05). The ΔE00 values of all the test groups increased within time (p<0.05). Conclusion: Mouthrinses have staining potential for Icon. Longer exposures to mouthrinses cause more severe staining. Clinicians and patients should be aware of the staining potential of mouthrinses used daily for the maintenance of the esthetic outcome provided by resin infiltrant.
