ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the effects of personal factors and daily habits on the DMFT index through survey data, radiological and clinical examinations of patients. Material and Methods: The study included 250 volunteers aged 18-40 who visited the Restorative Dentistry Department of Necmettin Erbakan University for routine clinical examinations. Informed consent was obtained after providing information about the study. Participants completed questionnaires that recorded their age, gender, education level, frequency of tooth brushing, type of toothpaste used (fluoride or non-fluoride), frequency of dental visits, dietary habits, consumption of sugary foods, and smoking status. Clinical dental examinations were conducted to assess the number of teeth affected by caries. Existing panoramic and bite-wing radiographs were used for radiographic evaluations. The numerical data obtained were statistically analyzed based on different groups and risk factors using SPSS software package, with p<0.05 considered significant. Results: In evaluating oral hygiene and sociodemographic status, women had lower average DMFT values compared to men. Individuals who brushed twice or more daily had lower DMFT values than those who did not brush, and non-smokers had lower values compared to smokers (p<0.05). Similarly, those using fluoride toothpaste, those without late-night eating habits, and those who did not frequently consume sticky foods also had lower average DMFT values, with these differences being significant (p<0.05). Additionally, no significant difference was found between the use of mouthwash or dental floss and DMFT. Conclusion: Daily habits and personal factors have a significant impact on the DMFT index.
