ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the possible effects of pursed lip breathing exercise on fatigue, aerobic capacity and pulmonary function in sedentary individuals. Material and Methods: In the study, which was designed with a 2-group pretest-posttest design, 26 female and 24 male participants [Experimental Group (EG)= Xage11.88±0.33; Control Group (CG)= Xage11.76±0.43] who were studying in a state-affiliated secondary school in Elazığ province and who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to 2 groups in equal numbers (EG=25; CG=25). Data were collected using the ''Fatigue Severity Scale'' for fatigue, ''Six Minute Walking Test'' for aerobic capacity and Spirometer for pulmonary function. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test and two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures were used to analyze the data. Results: In the study, it was determined that there was a significant difference in fatigue, vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) values for the experimental group in pretest-posttest values. However, it was determined that there was no significant difference in aerobic capacity values according to time. In the measurements taken according to time, it was determined that there were changes of 6.95% for aerobic capacity, 27.24% for fatigue, 26.00% for VC, 15.22% for FVC, and 19.11% for FEV1 in the experimental group. In addition, when the difference between the groups was examined, it was determined that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in aerobic capacity, fatigue, VC, FVC values, while there was no significant difference in Fev1 values. Conclusion: Pursed lip breathing exercise had a positive effect on fatigue and respiratory functions in 11-12 years old sedentary individuals, while it had no effect on aerobic capacity values. Accordingly, pursed lip exercise for at least 6 weeks may be recommended for 11-12 year old individuals in terms of positive changes in fatigue and respiratory parameters.
