ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of this observational methodological study is to determine the effect of physical examination skill training given in the laboratory using simulated models on students' skill competency, learning satisfaction and self-confidence levels, and to establish the validity and reliability of the physical examination skill checklists developed for the research. Material and Methods: 270 students registered in the 'internal medicine nursing' course and took the laboratory course in the 2017-2018 spring and 2018-2019 fall semesters at in the nursing faculty of a state university were included in the study. To collect data Internal Medicine Nursing Physical Examination Skill Checklists and Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence Scale in Learning were used. Number, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used as descriptive statistical methods for the data analysis. Paired samples test was used to evaluate skill scores before and after laboratory training. In the validity and reliability analyzes of the checklists; analysis of variance, content validity index, Cronbach's alpha, test-retest, Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20) and interobserver consistency analyzes were applied. Results: In the structured assessments before and after laboratory skills training, it was determined that the skill proficiency levels of 163 students increased compared to the initial assessments (p=0.000). In general, students' satisfaction and self-confidence levels were found to be high for the whole scale (3.84±0.63). Conclusion: The data obtained from the study show that physical examination skill practices increase students' skill proficiency levels, students' satisfaction and self-confidence levels are high, and physical examination skill checklists are a valid and reliable tool in the evaluation of students.
