ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was conducted as a quasi-experimental study to determine the effect of standardized patient use on skills, satisfaction and self-esteem in nursing students' training in deep breathing and coughing exercises. Material and Methods: The research was conducted with the second year nursing students (170) studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences of a university in the Aegean region. Students who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to the control (n=78) and study (n=79) groups. Deep breathing and coughing exercises were given to the study group with the standard patient, and the control group with the traditional method. After the laboratory applications were completed, the application steps of the students in both groups were observed and evaluated by observers other than researchers. The data were collected from 'Student Identification Form', 'Deep Breathing and Coughing Exercise Application Skill Assessment Form' and 'Deep Breathing and Coughing Exercise Practice Training Student Self-Confidence and Satisfaction Questionnaire'. The data were analyzed using mean±standard deviation, number (percentage), the Significance Test of the Difference Between Two Means, Mann-Whitney U test, and Pearson Chi-Square test using the SPSS package program. Results: 86% of the students participating in the study are women and 74% are graduates of Anatolian High School. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. The average application skill score in the study group was 68±15.4; 69±13.37 in the control group. There was no significant difference between the application skill average and satisfaction scores between the groups. Self-confidence score of the control group was found to be significantly higher than the study group. Conclusion: It was found that the standard patient and simulation in deep breathing and cough exercise training did not make a difference in the skill scores and satisfaction level of the students compared to the traditional method. It is thought that the traditional method familiar to the students in the control group positively affected their self-confidence level. It is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of different training methods on the subject.
