Awareness and Knowledge Level About the Effect of Electronic Cigarettes on Oral Cancer: A Survey Study

ÖZET
 Amaç: Elektronik sigara (e-sigara), toksik kimyasallar ve karsinojen maddeler içermektedir. E-sigara aerosollerinde bulunan bazı kimyasal bileşenlerin hayvanlarda nazofarenks kanserlerine neden olduğu gösterilmiştir ve ''bilinen bir insan kanserojeni'' olarak kabul edilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, e-sigara kullanımının ağız kanserine etkisi konusunda bireylerin farkındalık ve bilgi düzeylerinin değerlendirilmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: E-sigara hakkındaki bilgi ve tecrübeleri, e-sigaraya ilişkin ağız kanseri bilinci, bilgisi ve sosyodemografik profil üzerine sorular içeren bir anket hazırlandı. Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi Kliniğine başvuran ve çevrim içi olarak ulaşılan 18-65 yaş arası bireyler anketi tamamladı. Veriler istatistiksel olarak analiz edildi. Bulgular: Ankete katılan toplam 583 (ortalama yaş±standart sapma; 34±10,9) hastanın 282'si (%48,4) erkektir. E-sigara, geleneksel tütün ürünü, geleneksel tütün ürünü ve esigarayı birlikte kullanan ve sigara kullanmayan bireylerin sayısı sırasıyla; 9 (%1,5), 172 (%29,5), 37 (%6,3), 365'tir (%62,7). ''E-sigara sağlığa zararlı mıdır?'' sorusuna %80,1 oranında ''evet'' cevabı alınmış; eğitim seviyesi artışı ile anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu görülmüştür (p=0,006). Bireylerin %28'i e-sigaranın ağız kanserine neden olduğunu düşünmektedir. Geleneksel tütün ürünlerinden e-sigaraya geçiş sırasında en sık görülen olumsuz ağız bulgusu ağız kuruluğudur (%30,6). Bireylerin %55,7'si diş hekimlerinin e-sigara konusunda gerekli bilgilendirmeyi yapmadığı görüşündedir. Sonuç: E-sigara kullanımının ağız kanseri riski oluşturması konusunda farkındalığın düşük olduğu belirlenmiştir. E-sigaranın potansiyel oral etkileri konusunda diş hekimleri bilgilendirme yapmalıdır.

ABSTRACT
 Objective: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) contain toxic chemicals and carcinogens. Some chemical components in ecigarette aerosols have been shown to cause nasopharyngeal cancers in animals and are recognized as a ''known human carcinogen''. The aim of this study was to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of individuals about the effects of e-cigarette use on oral cancer. Material and Methods: A survey including questions on experiences about ecigarettes, oral cancer awareness and knowledge about e-cigarettes, and socio-demographic profile was prepared. Individuals aged 18-65 years who applied to Süleyman Demirel University, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and were reached online completed the survey. The data were statistically analyzed. Results: 583 (mean age±standard deviation; 34±10.9) patients participated in the survey and 282 (48.4%) were male. The number of individuals who use e-cigarettes, traditional tobacco products, traditional tobacco products and ecigarettes together and non-smokers were 9 (1.5%), 172 (29.5%), 37 (6.3%), 365 (62.7%), respectively. The question ''Are e-cigarettes harmful to health?'' was answered ''yes'' by 80.1%, and a significant relationship was observed with increasing education level (p=0.006). 28% of the individuals think that e-cigarettes cause oral cancer. The most common negative oral finding during the transition from traditional tobacco products to e-cigarettes was dry mouth (30.6%). 55.7% of the individuals think that dentists do not provide the necessary information about e-cigarettes. Conclusion: It was determined that awareness about the risk of oral cancer caused by e-cigarette use was low. Dentists should provide information about the potential oral effects of e-cigarettes.

1. TERMS OF USE

1.1. 4.1. "Turkiye Klinikleri" is completely free to determine which of the services and contents provided in the "SITE" will be charged.

4.2. People benefiting from the services provided by "Turkiye Klinikleri" and using the website can use the "SITE" only according to the law and only for personal reasons. Users have the criminal and civil liability for every process and action they take in the "SITE". Being late or failure of performance or non-defaulting of this and similar cases like this will not be the case from the viewpoint of "Turkiye Klinikleri", and "Turkiye Klinikleri" will not have any damage liability for these situations. "Force majeure" term will be regarded as outside of the concerned party's reasonable control and any situation that "Turkiye Klinikleri" cannot prevent even though it shows due diligence. Also, force majeure situations include but not limited to natural disasters, rebellion, war, strike, communication problems, infrastructure and internet failure, power cut and bad weather conditions.

8. LAW AND AUTHORISATION TO FOLLOW

Turkish Law will be applied in practicing, interpreting the hereby "Terms of Use" and managing the emerging legal relationships within this "Terms of Use" in case of finding element of foreignness, except for the rules of Turkish conflict of laws. Ankara Courts and Enforcement Offices are entitled in any controversy happened or may happen due to hereby contract.

9. CLOSING AND AGREEMENT

Hereby "Terms of Use" come into force when announced in the "SITE" by "Turkiye Klinikleri". The users are regarded to agree to hereby contract terms by using the "SITE". "Turkiye Klinikleri" may change the contract terms and the changes will be come into force by specifying the version number and the date of change on time it is published in the "SITE".
